Owner- Jaclin Dunne  3946 Park Lane, Traverse City, MI 49686 231-938-2582

February 7th- Moved back in this morning.  Was still itchy at times, breathing hard, hot areas. 8 PM- multiple new sores on sides.  He's still on Orbax!!!  Could it be from stopping the Ametryptaline... or being around a wool rug.

February 4th- Moved him out of house to back building (finished with heat, electricity).  I stayed with him.

February 3rd- 1 small crusty sore on left side.  Doc said to taper him off Ametryptaline.

February 2nd- Bumble panting hard and scratching.

January 19th- From Eagle Pack HS Fish to Lamb.

January 18th- Bad day- breathing hard at 7pm.  Had put down a rubber backed rug at the back door because it's too slippery.  Had washed/dried two rubber backed rugs today. Had gotten lax... did not cover the leather couch/chair for a week.  Removed rug and covered leather furniture again.

January 17th- Started using the homemade laundry detergent on clothes again.  Has not had to wear a shirt or jacket in some time now!

January 12th- Kenic Kayala Tea Tree Shampoo- Green  I was tested to see if I was a staph carrier and possibly the source of his problem.  Unfortunately, not.

January 5th- Switching back to Eagle Pack HS Kibble.

January 4th- Itching like crazy- Head and an area on his chest.  Too high a level of protein??

January 3rd- START ORBAX for 8 weeks- 2nd biopsy also came back as staph.

January 1st 2011- Been getting 1/2 and 1/2 pork loin and broccoli, green beans.  Dropped off protein/carb/calorie info to Doc to see if we can figure out how to prepare a balanced home cooked diet.

July 19th- Spoke with Doc... had dropped off papers to see if EPI-CLO2 shampoo and Kenic emu oil spray were ok/safe to use.  Got the ok to use both... the wheat germ in the emu spray must be ok even though it is a wheat product if he's improving. Also, it's true that dogs with wheat allergies may also not tolerate oatmeal.  I said we were going to try Canidae lamb meal and rice 21% protein because Eagle Pack Holistic Select contains oatmeal.  She said ok.   Told to keep everything else the same.

July 18th- Thinking maybe dust/vacuuming may cause him to get hives.  He's gotten worse after we vacuumed before... it's the reason I washed out the vacuum and bought new filters, even the hepa filter that's never supposed to need replacing!  I vacuumed today and we also took the drapes down to clean them and vacuumed the traverse rods, wiped down the ceiling fan.  Later that day he got bumps on his sides which got much smaller by the next day.  He tested negative for dust and dust mites (both dermal and RAST testing) but think we may need to have Doc repeat that particular allergen test.

YET ANOTHER PLAN:  When we vacuum, rather than him following me around, he'll have to go into the bedroom.  I'll then air out the house with the attic fan and then allow him to come back out.

July 16th, 2010-
Update... Holding my breath... we may have eliminated a trigger or triggers.  He's better than he's been in many months.  He had a bath this morning and while I was drying him off, I noticed that he had a lot fewer bumps and brown spots as I dried him off.  I was shocked at how much better his skin looks.  His neck, his thighs including the front edges, his shoulders, his back. His sides do have some bumps... one looks like a new one.  The seborrhea and flaky skin is gone.  At the moment anyway, he's looking much better... he does still scratch at times though.   I cancelled next week's appointment to discuss a diet lower in protein because I don't want to change anything.

Current plan- Bathe once every 5-10 days with Stone EPI-CLO2 Shampoo.  Spray with the Emu oil (1%) or  Listerine in between to see if the itching/sores can be minimized.  Antihistamines if needed.  Lower protein kibble- Eagle Pack Holistic Select Fish or Lamb kibble. Fresh foods- vegetables, a little fruit, cooked meat in between.

Pictures on July 16th, 2010-

I made more changes this past week...

  • July 16th- The past 5 days or so have been better. I gave him a bath with EPI-CLO2 this morning. His skin looks the best it has a several months.  I'm going to try to allow his coat to grow longer.

  • July 15th- Gave him a kong stuffed with canned EP Duck & Oatmeal, then frozen.  He started licking his left leg again a couple hours later.

Kathy mentioned that Marty had read the label on a store brand oatmeal container that people with wheat or gluten allergies might be affected by oatmeal.  So maybe oats aren't a good choice either...

    1. Oats do not contain gluten but they do contain a protein which is relatively similar that some people react to.

    2. Possibility of cross contamination: crop rotation with stray kernels of wheat... harvested together and milled at the same facilities.
      True or False?

  • July 14th- Put down 5 rolls of sod around the back deck.  Reason- Kaytee had peed and killed the grass.

  • July 12th- Air conditioner professionally cleaned.  (But Jim says that thing only pulls air, it doesn't go into the house.)

  • July 11th- Removed Bumble from his room... he spends a few hours in there in the morning or when we leave... he's now in Meesha's room (my old work room).  Reason- Maybe he's allergic to the flooring or cedar lined closet.

  • July 10th- Started him back on Eagle Pack Holistic Select- Fish, Lamb.  Reason- He never had a problem with it so maybe he should go back to it.  The pack had gotten sick twice most likely due to the Wysong (recalled but wasn't aware if it until just a couple of months ago)... at that time we discontinued all foods and supplements.

  • July 10th- Also gave him Eagle Pack Holistic Select Treats- rectangular fish treats. They appear to make him lick his leg obsessively on the same day as eaten... it's something he seldom did even at his worst.  These treats contain spelt... RAST allergy testing did diagnose him with a wheat allergy.

"... Spelt was commonly grown in ancient times... Some people who are allergic to wheat question whether they can eat spelt-containing foods.      Unfortunately, spelt is so similar to wheat that it cannot be recommended for people with allergies to wheat..."
    Washington State University Extension- http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublications/eb1977/eb1977.pdf

I had to wash his leg because he wouldn't leave it alone!  Only discontinued the treats, kept him in the EP Holistic Select kibble.

  • July 9th- Last meal of Wellness Core Fish that the Great Dane Lady recommended.  Switching to a lower protein diet.  Not going to wait.

  • July 8th- Covered leather couch with a cotton quilt on the seat, then a cotton slip cover, and finally another cotton quilt or comforter.  Chair covered with a cotton quilt.  Reason- He might be allergic to the leather dye or something used in the tanning process.

  • July 8th- Epi-ClO2 Antiseptic Deodorizing Shampoo.

  • July 5th- Kalaya Emu Oil Moisturizing Spray: http://glo-marr-kenic.com/item169.htm
I started spraying him with this when the itching starts.   Dawn uses it for fleas too-
    http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?p=410272#p410272

  • Idexx website- If a dog has pyoderma, they should not be on a high protein diet...
    https://www.vetconnect.com.au/5min/data/09980999.htm

    DIET

       • Hypoallergenic diet if disease is secondary to food allergy; otherwise a high quality, well balanced dog food.
       • High protein, poor quality "bargain" diets and excessive supplementation should be avoided.

  • July 3rd- Discontinued antibiotics AND probiotics. Reason- His skin broke out again despite weeks on Clavamox.

  • June 29th- Washed out the vacuum and replaced the regular filer and the hepa filter.  Reason- Maybe something vacuumed up before is causing the problem by being circulated in the air.

  • June 28th-  Another bath but this time with EPI-ClO2 Antiseptic Deodorizing Shampoo by Stone

  • June 25th-  Itchy/bumpy... repeated bath with BPO-3 Shampoo

  • June 22nd & 25th-  Bath with Vet Solutions BPO 3 Shampoo 3% Benzoyl Shampoo for pyoderma.

  • June 20th-  Completed on June 20th.  Tiled the shop with vinyl composite tile that's glued down- June 11, 12, 13, 19 & 20th.

_________________ Something Above May Have Been A Trigger OR May Have Helped Fix The Problem _______________________

Biopsies came back.  Not a parasite.  Continue to look for allergens to eliminate.  Discard plan to do the 4 rounds on Revolution.

June 9- Fatty acids stopped on June 6th, turtle neck shirts started again on June 7th.  Vet appointment on June 9th.  She didn't think the antibiotic was doing much good despite the culture that was done. CRAP.  Thank God he's still a happy, goofy boy.  Biopsies on June 11th...

Pictures from early morning on June 6th.

June 5th... Shave down a 11pm with a #7 blade.  Bath with Vet Solutions Universal Medicated Shampoo because his skin is horrid.  He got some Eagle Pack Holistic Select canned food tonight by mistake.  I don't' think it makes a difference.

June 4th and 5th... putting composite tile down in the shop.

June 2- Bumble- left side.  Bumble was more bumpy again so he had a bath with Eqyss on May 31.  Doing 4 rounds of Revolution... one every 15 days and the pack once every 30 days.  Meesha had 2 drops to be sure it didn't harm her due to the liver problem... 1/2 does on Saturday June 5th.

Chest- May 28th

May 26th:  He's doing better.  I gave him another bath with blue Dawn on Saturday and used the Kong scrubber to remove some of the dried scabby stuff. He continues to have a few of the red bumps... maybe 3-4... and multiple brown spots on his chest.  The biopsy results are back.  staphylococcus sp.- coagulase positive 3+... termed Pyoderma which means it's due to an allergy, parasite or autoimmune problem.  I don't think it's autoimmune... would it be healing if it was?   Being treated with Clavamox for two weeks possibly up to 6 weeks.  So which came first... the staph then the itching or the itching then the staph?

May 21st:  We had the bump on his foot removed... they shaved it off and cauterized it.  Looks good!  They also used a local and did a biopsy of one of the sores and sent it off to see if we could get any more info that might help.  He scabby but less itching and fewer new bumps.

May 20th: Pork and veggies for breakfast... gave a handful of Eagle Pack HS fish formula 9:30am, his old food that we had stopped when we had vomiting in the pack twice last year.  Seeing doc about foot pad bump.  Looks like it's getting bigger.

Right Foot Bump (picture comparison- March 22 to May 20)...

May 19th: Started Wellness Core- PM meal.  Hot areas on skin after meal.  Two new spots on May 20th.  Back to pork and veggies.

May 18th:  His skin has flared again including an open sore on his back, 3 bumps on right hip and neck and chewing back leg. Purchased a Haan floor steamer so we could clean the floors without any cleaning products.  Wondering if they put some disinfectant in the machine before shipping it or if it does something to the vinyl flooring?

Other things to consider- Suntan lotion while mowing the lawn (Hawaiian Tropic), painted outside window with window paint, unpacked Enesco stock, stopped Vaseline Intensive Care  Moisture Locking lotion, removed rubber backed rugs from kitchen, removed drain pad from dog bowls at skin, other dogs bathed with Chris Christensen and Eqyss shampoo- Emma 12th CC, Kayt 13th? CC, Darby EQ 14th, Pan CC 16th.

Pictures from May 18th, 2010

May 14th: Bath with blue Dawn... getting flaky and kind of greasy.

May 12th: I don't think there are any new bumps... I think all current sores are scabbed over and shrinking... I really hope they're healing up.  He's still getting hot areas on his skin and itching... maybe clearing the allergen from his system will just take some time.  Starting again on Grape Seed Extract to see if it helps things along.  Bathed him yesterday with EQyss Micro-Tek Medicated Shampoo.  The fungus test came back- NEGATIVE.  Going to get a steam cleaner for the floors so we can clean but avoid cleaning products.  Washing the bedding in baking soda only.  I pray we've figured this out...

May 11th: Had a consult with Linda Arndt.

May 8th:  No Oster blade disinfectant.

May 7th:  His skin is so bad... I think it was the worst it's ever been..  The only things I can think we changed were MORE chicken AND MORE Chlorox disinfecting wipes (yellow container).  We stopped the raw chicken yesterday and stopped the Chlorox wipes today.  We'll see what happens.

May 6th:  Bathed with Hexadine shampoo again.  Preliminary results are back, waiting to hear from vet.  (Preliminary results- nothing has grown yet.) Been feeding raw chicken since April 27th.  Skin is horrible, worst it's ever been.  Shaved down again with #7.  Must wear shirts all the time now.  Chicken allergy or yeast??  Back on cooked pork loin and vegetables.

Pictures from May 5th and 6th, 2010.

Pictures from May 3rd, 2010.

April 30th... hair hides so much...

April 25th:  MORE itchy bumps than in a LONG time... probably 30.  Wondering now if it's the starch (rice) that's causing all this... thinking of feeding raw and eliminating all grains and starches.  Sigh.  Scheduling some hair test where they pluck hairs and send them off to be tested... looking again for yeast or maybe a fungus.

Pictures from April 24th, 2010.

Just a few of the shirts that help to protect his skin.

April 11th: He was itchy and a bit overdue for a bath with the Universal shampoo.  His skin is looking better... very little brown stuff on his skin where the sores were, no seborrhea.  He still has some bumps but there are fewer of them and they're smaller.  The scratching is less intense, less frequent.  Spraying with gold Listerine in between.  He can now go without a shirt more often.

April 4th: We put him back on pork, veggies and added brown rice so it's a little more balanced.  Another vet with Universal shampoo.

April 2nd: We started the Natura Healthwise chicken kibble on April 2nd.  The problems continued, the occasional coughing too.

March 30th:  We started the Fromm Gold chicken kibble... his skin started breaking out again and he was getting the hot areas on his skin.  He was also coughing ocassionally like he had something stuck in his throat (maybe he did).

March 22, 2010  Bumble will be 2 years old on May 31... neutered male (cryptorchid) from a show breeder in southern California.  Said to have never had any autoimmune issues in her lines.

We had changed our entire feeding program when our pack of 7 dogs became sick for a second time on August 9th of last year... first time was June 31 through July 2.  We threw away all food and treats and stopped all supplements including the Nzymes products.  We did not restart them because at that time, we didn't know what had caused everyone's vomiting.  We switched to a different brand of kibble.  I was searching for a new kibble yesterday and discovered that Wysong kibble, which was one of the foods we were feeding as a treat and had thrown away, had been recalled.   https://www.wysong.net/moreinfo.php

Bumble's skin has been a mess since late October... we've both dermal and RAST allergy testing, 3 months of a food trial with z/d Ultra, two rounds of Simplecef, a daily antihistamines.  Multi skin scrapings... twice. Revolution to be sure it's not mites.  We've tried all kinds of shampoos.  Have been making homemade laundry detergent, went to high temperature water with baking soda only.  Using Ivory non-fragranced soaps, no pre or after shave, eliminated almost all cleaners including bleach. Trying to see if by eliminating these things whether his skin would improve.  RAST testing, if even reliable, indicates he's allergic to wheat and beet pulp is borderline.  He has been miserable.  We've avoided further use of antibiotics since December by keeping shirts on him to protect his skin.  He's had seborrhea... greasy, flakey skin, sores, hives... he would get hot areas on his skin, physically hotter, that would begin to itch.  We spray him with Listerine or 2% Nzymes Ox-E solution . He had been tested for yeast and it came back negative but I had been washing him with DVM Chlorhexiderm shampoo (now discontinued like Maladeb) once a week.  I'm now using Virbac Hexadene shampoo once a week.  He has always been a physically warm boy... not feverish though.

An holistic vet had him on grape seed extract, double probiotic, Echinacea, milk thistle, vitamin e, fatty acids... no improvement so this too was discontinued after about 4 weeks.

I had stopped the medicated shampoo and went with a one for itching by Bio-Groom about 2 weeks ago.  The brown spots and bumps are coming back.  He had a bath with Hexadene shampoo today. Though we have not retested for yeast, I'm pretty confident that's what I'm seeing between his pads.  He has had some redness with a little brown before but this is the first I've ever seen gunk like this between the pads. I sprayed his feet with Malaseb spray (still have some), let it set for a bit, then wiped off the brown stuff shown.  We discontinued the prescription z/d Ultra food on March 17th... he's been getting cooked pork loin and broccoli/green beans/cauliflower for about a week now while trying to decide what to do.

The next thing our vet mentioned we might try is Ketoconazole.  So I took him off the Hill's z/d Ultra and put him on pork and broccoli, cauliflower, green beans to see if removing the starch would make any difference.  Found out yesterday that Wysong food recall last year.   After looking back at what happened, I now wonder if my pack got sick on the Wysong dog food, damn it any way.  Bumble's skin had been fine up until this time. The new theory is now that Bumble's skin has gotten bad because we had stopped the Nzymes program and EP food.   I ordered both the Fromm and Natura- Healthwise kibble today.  Ordering Universal Medicated Shampoo today.  Discontinuing the antihistamines while starting Nzymes again. Updates will follow...

Bumble gets bumps that appear more on his sides and back, hips and hocks.
Order of Pictures- Current to Past.

Blow dryer used to photograph skin on March 22, 2010 as I was drying Bumble off after a bath. Bumps and seborrhea again showing up... I think the Chlorhexiderm and Hexidene shampoo helped to keep it under control.  Ordering Universal Medicated Shampoo today...

   END 2009... START 2010

December 21, 2009

December 21, 2009

Bumble's extremely itchy... to the point of damaging his skin. On three antihistamines- Hydroxozine, Benedryl and Claritin.

Food Trial Start- December 19th. Hill's Prescription z/d Ultra kibble.

Bumble- December 1, 2009.
Waiting for the last sore to heal,
then 3-4 more days of antibiotics.

Bumble's Skin- November 9th, 2009
Seborrhea and pustules.  Put on Simplicef.

The 10-15 minute wait... flakey, itchy skin with sores.
A bath is a must every 5-7 days to help control the flakiness.

Vaseline fixed the problem.  No more raised, rough
skin on the back of his nose and no more blotchiness.
http://oesusa.com/BumblesNose102409.jpg

Applying Vaseline to soften his nose.

We had two rounds of vomiting in
our pack that required medical care.

June 31, 2009... Bumble had to stay at the vet for fluids due to vomiting of blood.  Kaytee had a reaction to Metronidazole on July 2nd... she was on it for vomiting.

Kaytee's reaction to the
Metronidazole prescribed for vomiting.

August 9th, 2009... the pack was vomiting again.  Emma and Maggie had to see the on-call vet on Sunday.

August 10th, 2009-  We had seen our regular vet to discuss this problem. She agreed that we should throw away all current foods (Eagle Pack Holistic Select and the treats- Wysong kibble and Evo.)  We discontinued the Nzymes supplements too because we didn't know what was causing them to be sick. There was even a question as to whether it might be the probiotics. We switched the pack over to a different brand of kibble- Eukanuba Naturally Wild... Bumble then went to Hills' z/d Ultra.

I found a recall notice on the Wysong dog food website yesterday
(March 22, 2010).  https://www.wysong.net/moreinfo.php
